Searching “therapist near me” in India turns up psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists, life coaches, and psychiatrists, often listed side by side as if they’re interchangeable. They are not, and the regulatory picture in India makes it genuinely harder to tell who’s who than it should be. Here’s what actually matters when you’re choosing.
Understand what’s regulated, and what isn’t, in India
This is the part most guides skip. In India, a few professional titles are backed by statutory registration, meaning there’s a legal register a practitioner must be enrolled in to use that title:
- Clinical psychologists are registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) on the Central Rehabilitation Register
- Psychiatrists, who are medical doctors, are registered with their State Medical Council
Titles like “counsellor,” “psychotherapist,” and general “psychologist” are not currently backed by an equivalent statutory register in the way clinical psychology and psychiatry are, even though a 2021 law has provided for future regulation. This means association memberships or certificates alone don’t guarantee the same thing a statutory registration does. It doesn’t mean every counsellor or psychotherapist is unqualified, many have rigorous training, it means the burden of verification sits more with you as the client.
What to actually check before booking
Their degree and training institution
Ask what they studied and where. A recognized master’s degree in psychology, counselling psychology, or clinical psychology from an established institution is the baseline. If they list a specific specialization or certification (like expressive arts therapy, trauma-informed care, or a specific therapeutic framework), that’s worth noting, it tells you what lens they’ll bring to the work.
Whether you need a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist specifically
If you’re seeking a formal diagnosis, medication, or are dealing with a severe psychiatric condition, you specifically need a psychiatrist (for medication) or an RCI-registered clinical psychologist (for clinical assessment and diagnosis). For most everyday concerns, relationship issues, stress, life transitions, self-understanding, a counselling psychologist or psychotherapist is often the right fit and, in many cases, the more accessible starting point.
Their therapeutic approach
Ask what frameworks they use, CBT, psychodynamic work, IFS, somatic approaches, expressive arts, and whether that matches what you’re looking for. A therapist who can name their approach clearly is generally a good sign; it means they’re working from a considered method rather than winging it session to session.
How the first session actually feels
Credentials get you in the door, but fit is what makes the work effective. Research consistently points to the therapeutic relationship itself as one of the strongest predictors of good outcomes, regardless of specific technique. If the first session feels rushed, judgmental, or simply mismatched, it’s reasonable to try someone else. Most good therapists expect this and won’t take it personally.
Practical logistics
Session format (in-person or online), cost per session, scheduling flexibility, and whether they work with your specific concern (some therapists specialize in areas like grief, couples work, or adolescent mental health) all matter for whether the arrangement is sustainable long-term, not just useful in theory.
Red flags worth taking seriously
- Vague or evasive answers about their qualifications or training
- Guarantees of a specific outcome or timeline (“you’ll be fixed in five sessions”)
- Dismissing your questions about their approach or credentials as unnecessary
- Breaches of basic confidentiality, even in small ways, early in the relationship
How Aayina approaches this
Aayina’s team is transparent about credentials and training upfront: our founders are counselling psychologists with degrees from established institutions and specialized certifications (including expressive arts therapy training), and our approach draws on named clinical frameworks rather than a one-size-fits-all method. Many clients start with an initial conversation specifically to check for fit before committing to ongoing work.
Not sure if it’s the right fit? Book an initial session with Aayina and find out before committing further.
